‘I Be Trying’ The Open-Hearted, Passionate and Relatable New Mississippi Hill Country Blues Album from Cedric Burnside

Cedric Burnside started playing the drums in his grandfather R. L.’s band when he was just 13. Burnside grew up immersed in the culture and sound of the Mississippi Hill Country Blues, as R. L. was one of the masters of the genre, and an inspiration to bands like the Black Keys, who paid tribute to him earlier this year on Delta Kream. Burnside has been playing the blues professionally for nearly 30 years and, on his new album, I Be Trying’, the two-time Grammy nominee proves once again that he is the greatest living practitioner of the Mississippi Hill Country Blues.  Longtime collaborator Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi All-Stars) joins Burnside again, lending his considerable skill on the electric guitar. The album is full of the deep, hypnotic groove synonymous with the Hill Country blues, but also revealing the range of Burnside’s influences in rock, hip-hop, funk and soul. Burnside effectively pushes his genre of the blues in new directions,

Burnside’s writing style is simple, direct, and elegant. He plainly explains life’s joys, frustrations, and beauty in the wake of the last year’s events, laying out stories with precision and economy.
