Description

Directed by Andrew Slater, Echo In The Canyon explores the beginnings of the Laurel Canyon music scene (1965 -1967) through the stories of those who lived it, and the artists who carry its influence to this day. Naturally, it has a fantastic accompanying soundtrack.

The 13-track collection shines a spotlight on cornerstone hits of the era through new reworkings of classics. Narrator Jakob Dylan’s deep and expressive voice reinterprets timeless songs by the Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas and more, with a rotating cast of duet superstars. Cat Power’s sultry voice sweetens Dylan’s version of the Turtles’ “You Showed Me,” while Regina Spektor’s stunning turn on Buffalo Springfield’s “Expecting to Fly” casts a spectacular spell. A highlight is Fiona Apple dropping in to add harmonies on the Beach Boys’ “In My Room”.

There are performances from Brian Wilson, Ringo Starr, Michelle Phillips, Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Roger McGuinn and Jackson Browne. The finished documentary also includes vintage songs performed in 2015 at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles by Fiona Apple, Beck, Cat Power and Regina Spektor. An excellent companion to the film or standalone enjoyable set, showing clearly how influential the California Sound has remained to the present day!
