Description

In 1971, there’s wasn’t a rock band on the planet offering a synthesis of rock, blues, jazz and country quite like the Allman Brothers. Touring in support of their second studio album, Idlewild South, the band had perfected a killer live show consisting of epic originals and innovative covers, all given to fresh improvisation on a nightly basis.

And now, the Allman Brothers Band’s 50th anniversary celebration continues with the release of Fillmore West ’71, a freshly unearthed 4CD collection of music every bit as rich, rewarding and pioneering as the performances documented on the group’s landmark live album At Fillmore East. But whereas At Fillmore East showcases highlights from several Allman Brothers shows recorded during March of ’71 at Bill Graham’s New York City venue, Fillmore West ’71 contains three full performances from Jan. 29 to 31, 1971, at Graham’s sister concert hall in San Francisco (plus a bonus live jam track of “Mountain” from a 1970 New Orleans show clocking in at a whopping 45 minutes!).

The recordings on Fillmore West ’71 were culled from the original reel-to-reel soundboard masters. Allman Brothers archivist Kirk West tracked down the tapes, which had previously been in the possession of band crew members. As the masters had been stored in closets and attics for many years, transferring and restoring the tapes took several attempts over several years, with sound quality improving as the technology did. Now fans can relive the glory of the original lineup with a blistering set that covers an epic weekend of live music from the heyday!
