Robin Trower returns once again with yet another mind-boggling display of six string wizardry on Coming Closer To The Day. Trower is a revelation: at 73 years young he still puts out recordings on a regular basis that take the breath away. His latest offering is no different, a majestic display once again by the man many call “The White Hendrix” as he pulls and bends his way across his fretboard like a man possessed.

Coming Closer To The Day has a soulful, contemplative quality to it that sets Trower apart from most of the blues-influenced rock guitarists we normally hear. He is secure enough in his own work to eschew the guns-blazing approach most players use as their default setting, and instead focuses on his songwriting and phrasing. From the opening moments of the first track, Trower builds with time, space, and meaning, delivering a sound equally packed with high-level playing and open air. He never goes full-throttle, merely spraying notes out of the speakers, but employs an exquisite sense of phrasing and tone that holds listeners spellbound. The calibre of the songwriting on is matched by Trower’s performances, with the bandleader handling all instruments except the drums. His basslines are supple and rhythmic, his vocals growl and and the lead guitar work only adds to his reputation as an all-time-great soloist. It’s this kind of sensibility – and sensitivity – that fits an artist in the later part of his career and teaches a lesson many up-and-comers could stand to learn.
