Description

Mick Thomas’ Roving Commission new album ‘City’s Calling Me’ is dedicated to his (& our) beloved Melbourne.  The group’s new record, City’s Calling Me, a ‘guided tour between the cities of the heart’, began life as a simple covers album, rapidly mutating into something more amidst the 2020 lockdown.

The album features extensive collaborations with various artists, including major contributions from Jen Anderson – Thomas’ Weddings, Parties, Anything bandmate.

Mostly composed of covers, the album also includes a rendition of The Suburbs in Between, a poem by Barry Humphries, read by Brian Nankervis. Other tracks have come via some of Thomas’ favourite local songwriters, including Sal  Kimber, Van Walker and Charles Jenkins, as well as a left-field pick from Legends of Motorsport.

“Perhaps 2020 was a year when we were all forced to evaluate what was most important to us, what we could do without and what we missed the most,” Thomas says on writing the record. “For me it was an easy answer: I missed playing music with other people – something I was able to approximate in isolation – and I missed being out and about in the city I have spent the last 30 years bumping around in.”
