Satis Factory is the second album from Mattiel, the band formed in Atlanta in 2014 and led by primary singer and lyricist Mattiel Brown.
The latest offering carries itself with more assurance than last year’s eponymous debut, with songcraft and witty wordplay coming to the forefront. There’s much here to love for fans of formative influences The White Stripes and the Black Lips, yet Mattiel have mastered their own unique and mischievous energy. Tackling interesting ideas and putting rock through an avant garde filter, Brown’s powerful vocals once again impress too, on what ultimately feels like a significant step forward.
Exploring the quest for both self- and creative fulfilment, the album resolves that the journey is more exciting that the destination. As Brown explains, “I’m happiest when I’m continually searching for that satisfaction even though I may never reach it.” A lusty, witty, charismatic racket.
