Description

Grammy-winning American jazz vocalist Kurt Elling joins popular Australian trumpeter/all-rounder James Morrison for a live concert recording made at the famous Birdland jazz venue in New York.

The Elling/Morrison collaboration is an improbable one, the former having spent his career restlessly pushing boundaries; the latter content to stay comfortably within them. The collaboration resulted in a more relaxed and playful Elling; one who emphasised swinging hard as much as creative hipness.

Initially exploring each and every avenue of timbre, range, and style he could as a vocalist, Elling’s style has become more restrained and refined as the years have passed. Among the hallmarks of this Live In New York concert was the fact that, as his remarkable voice ages, it grows darker and richer. This enhanced all aspects of his work. Like Morrison on trumpet (or whichever horn he chooses to pick up), Elling’s artistry is so highly developed that technical challenges seem to disappear. And Morrison – on piano at times as well as trumpet – offers supple accompaniment as Elling stretches improvised syllables into imaginative shapes, providing an understated but memorable accompaniment to a thoroughly entertaining star. A joy to see and hear!
