Description

Kentucky folk singer-songwriter Joan Shelley made the trip to Reykjavik, Iceland to record her 6th LP, Like The River Loves The Sea, collaborating with Nathan Salsburg, James Elkington, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Bill, Maiden Radio and more.

Over the years, Shelley has trafficked in the strain of intimate, earthy folk and country that calls to mind everyone from Nick Drake to Iron & Wine to Gillian Welch – and this album is indeed a gorgeous, pastoral collection with some exquisite moments. Like the River Loves the Sea feels simultaneously grounded and even more expansive as it tracks its way through the changing seasons of a relationship. It’s a collection that feels tinged with melancholy. As ever, Shelley is making quiet, intimate music – music that carries a delicate sense of atmosphere. There’s real chemistry in the way Shelley and her collaborators interact, but she proves herself a rare musician who can surround herself with collaborators and still sound exactly like herself.

Like a more pastoral variation on Joni Mitchell’s Blue, the reduced volume on Like The River Loves The Sea gives the music strength, not fragility, and this is Joan Shelley’s best work to date. Turns out that trip to Reykjavik was a wise investment.
