WARMER is the surprise sequel to Jeff Tweedy’s gracious 2018 acoustic record WARM – the two companion albums now together in the same release. The double set showcases Tweedy’s aged songwriting that continues to be humble and revealing. “WARMER means as much to me as WARM and might just as easily have been released as the first record of the pair,” says Tweedy.
After two decades of carrying the mantle of an important indie artist, Tweedy has retreated to his own Chicago studio, where he’s freed himself from expectations with a series of recordings that blur the distance between cutting-room demos and some of his career-best songs – rather than aiming for polished showiness, he documented a songwriter humbly at work, to great success. That humble magic of WARM carries through the second album too, and these songs are as revealing and beguiling as the first batch.
What materializes is a beautifully confounding collection of literary mastery, intertwined with sparse, albeit flummoxing instrumental compositions – tender acoustic and slide-guitar arrangements, adroitly managed bursts of noise, and a rhythm section that puts the movements of life into a neat, cohesive order.
