Description

“How do you describe Eddy Senay’s music? Instead of going in-depth on the guitarist’s technique and genre, it’s a lot easier to show the cover of the 1972 LP Step By Step and say, ‘This is what he sounds like.'” The cover photo, featuring Senay in a zip-up butterfly collared sweater and newsboy cap complete with pompom sitting on the steps of a redstone Detroit church, sums up the artist and his sound. It has all the hallmarks of the early 70s era, resting on the solid foundation of the Motor City and its musical background.

Now lovingly re-released on the Modern Harmonic label, the Detroit axeman’s second opus brings Senay’s singular style to a set of indispensable instrumental tracks that are chock full of finesse. Eddy is backed by a crew of masterful musicians, and together they employ a wide range of influences, mainly tight psychedelic funk and Latin flows. The tracks are all arranged by the band’s keyboardist Rudy Robinson; there’s kind of a choppy funk groove underlying the whole set, with Eddie’s guitar bad-stepping its way over Rudy’s sweet keys, all in a lean groove that’s laid-back and loose. Fuzz-Laden Psychedelic Guitar Funk indeed!
