Description

Delbert McClinton is a legend among Texas roots music aficionados, not only for his amazing longevity, but for his ability to combine country, blues, soul, and rock & roll as if there were no distinctions between them. A formidable harmonica player long before he recorded as a singer, McClinton performed with legends like Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reid, and more. McClinton’s career began in the late ’50s, he has won 3 Grammy awards, and incredibly, this is his 26th studio release!

Tall, Dark & Handsome – which features his Self-Made Men band and sax player Dana Robbins – is a disc that not only highlights the impressive depth and breadth of his sound and style, but also showcases the veteran singer-songwriter at the height of his impressive powers. Midway between a musical travelogue and a historical journey, the 14-song set of original fare covers the musical waterfront from gritty 12-bar roadhouse blues to jazzy horn-driven jump blues, zippy violin-laced speakeasy swing, south of the border Latin grooves, soulful ballads, New Orleans funk and more – all voiced with McClinton’s sandy Doug Sahm-meets-Randy Newman drawl and easy confidence. It’s not a stretch to say that McClinton, at age 78, is making the best music of his career.
