Following their coronation as Best New Band at the 2019 Austin Music Awards, Black Pumas release their debut self-titled album, a whacky sonic journey that transmutes soul into something idiosyncratically modern.
Black Pumas is the creative partnership between Grammy Award-winning guitarist / producer Adrian Quesada and 27-year-old songwriter Eric Burton. After the two connected via mutual friends in the Austin scene, they began to collaborate on a new sound, reminiscent of Ghostface Killah and Motown in equal measure. How it worked we’re still unsure, but this original sound ensured that Black Pumas’ weekly local residency quickly became one of the most talked-about events on the local music circuit, and the project is now reaching all corners of the globe!
Some have described it as psychedelic soul, but the Pumas are more direct, disciplined and easily digestible. It’s a debut so perfectly realised by the standards they’ve set themselves that you wonder what could possibly come next.
