Description

The first half of Fever Dream unfolds with a loose 1970s groove and songs that don’t really care about when they should stop.It sounds like an organic continuation of Ben Watt’s 2014 album Hendra, in which the former Everything but the Girl member returned to rock after his reinvention as a dance music DJ.Like its predecessor, the album is enhanced by the thoughtful presence of ex-Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, who provides a mellow accompaniment to Watt’s lyrics about time passing. But the shift to a jazzier style in the second half is less successful, exposing Watt’s plain voice and a countervailing temptation to overwrite, so that dancers in a club become not only a “ritual of strangers” (an acute image) but also “a temporary family in a liminal collusion”.
